This presentation gives an overview of the project I am working on for my MPhys research year as part of the Soft Matter Group at the University of Surrey. We plan to use the facilities at the Ion Beam Centre to analyse the depth distribution of polymers in a thin film to determine whether stratification has occurred during the evaporation of the solvent. We will use combinations of linear and star polymers to study the transition from linear polymer chains to dense spheres (colloids) and develop fundamental understanding of the surface properties of thin films.
